Nairobi County Assembly has demanded prompt response to fire out breaks in the City by the County Government of Nairobi.
Nairobi Assembly Culture and Social Services Committee Chairperson Clarence Munga applauded the 15 min response but urged the city fire department to ensure that is improved again to save more lives and fire effects.
Munga has also called on the County Government to ensure proper supply of water to fire department as that has been a major challenge to the disaster team.
“I think there are issues of emergency cases and disaster around wards and disaster related cases. As from Elnino period we needed a kitty to ensure they cater for such kind of issues. Generally as we speak there are cases of negligence done by Wananchi for example leaving the children behind and causing fire in the respective houses. Because there is no one taking care but of course from our discussion you have also realized that some of our fire vehicles are also grounded and that calls for quick address. The County has managed to improve response time by 15min maximum that’s commendable but as a committee we will ensure that our oversight role is not compromised and the Nairobians gets proper services.” Munga said.
It has also been established that several fire engines are grounded due to many mechanical problems.
The Disaster team led by Chief Officer Disaster Bramwel Simiyu says the County is only depending on few water hydrants and that they are reaching out to Nairobi City Water and Sewage Company to ensure constant supply of water to fire centers.
“For the delays we have talked about issues of the fuel which currently the mobility sector has up their game and they’re are working around the clock to ensure fuel is consistently available. The other challenge is the water hydrants so for this we shall coordinate with Nairobi City Water and Sewage Company to ensure that we have proper water supply.” Simiyu said.
