The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry, and Mining conducted a fact-finding mission at Mzuri Sweets Ltd, located along the Mombasa-Malindi Road, following concerns that the factory might be constructed on riparian land. The factory, which occupies an 8-acre plot, has been at the center of allegations regarding its environmental compliance.

The visit was led by Committee Chairperson Hon. David Gikaria (Nakuru Town East) alongside Kilifi County MP, Hon. Getrude Mbeyu. The MPs engaged with the factory’s management team, including Managing Director Mr. Solanki Hiten, Human Resource Manager Mr. George Ongany, and a representative from the Kilifi County National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), Mr. William Odeyo.

During the meeting, the Committee sought clarity on how NEMA approved the construction of the factory on what was alleged to be wetland. They also inquired about the environmental safeguards put in place to mitigate any potential harm to the surrounding ecosystem.

The factory’s management presented documentation proving that they had received the necessary construction clearance after fulfilling all conditions set by NEMA. Among the compliance measures was the establishment of an artificial wetland and a robust waste management system to minimize environmental impact. To further address the Committee’s concerns, the management team guided the MPs on a tour of the facility, showcasing the efforts made to preserve the local environment.

Despite assurances from the factory, the Committee directed Mzuri Sweets Ltd to submit all relevant clearance and environmental compliance documents to the Committee through the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly. Hon. Mbeyu emphasized the importance of transparency, requesting that minutes from previous meetings between the factory and the local community be included in the submitted documentation.

“We need to ensure that all environmental regulations have been thoroughly followed, and the community’s concerns are addressed,” Hon. Mbeyu stated, urging the factory management to maintain their efforts in protecting the environment as the Committee continues its review.

The visit marks an important step in addressing the environmental issues surrounding Mzuri Sweets Ltd. While the factory claims compliance, the Committee’s investigation will provide clarity on the matter, ensuring that all regulations concerning the use of riparian land are upheld.
