NAIROBI, Kenya – A Kibera court has granted bail to Hussein Sheikh Abdullahi, a serial fraudster accused of defrauding over three million shillings by falsely promising to incorporate a businessman into a macadamia and cashew nuts export business. Abdullahi was freed on a cash bail of Ksh 500,000, with an alternative bond of one million shillings and a surety of a similar amount, as ordered by Magistrate Samson Temu.
Abdullahi, who is still in custody pending his release on bail, faces two charges. The first charge alleges that on January 19, 2024, at Maida Restaurant in South B, Nairobi, he fraudulently obtained Ksh 3.5 million from Mohammed Ali Aden. Abdullahi had falsely claimed that he could help Aden venture into the business of buying and exporting macadamia and cashew nuts, a promise that prosecutors argue he knew was untrue.
In the second charge, Abdullahi is accused of issuing a bad cheque, contrary to Section 316(1)(a) as read with Section 316A(4) of the Penal Code. It is alleged that on February 5, 2024, at Jabavu Heights in Kilimani, Nairobi, he issued a cheque worth Ksh 3.5 million (serial number 000002) through Equity Bank in favor of Tula Commodities Limited. Investigators claim Abdullahi was aware that his account, number 1450284992675 at Equity Bank Kenya Limited, had insufficient funds at the time.
Magistrate Temu’s court also noted that Abdullahi is yet to be re-arrested for another case involving obtaining Ksh 13 million from a separate businessman under false pretenses. The seriousness of the allegations has prompted ongoing investigations by detectives, who are monitoring his activities closely.
The case is scheduled for a mention on December 9, 2024, for pre-trial directions, where further details of the charges and trial process will be outlined.
