Nairobi, 10.30.2024 — The Nairobi River Commission held its inaugural meeting this week, signaling a significant step towards restoring the Nairobi River and enhancing urban development along its banks. The meeting, hosted by Principal Secretary Charles Hinga of the State Department for Housing, was chaired by Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, with attendance from key stakeholders including the Principal Secretaries, Secretary, commissioners, and other members.

The commission outlined an ambitious plan to integrate urban housing with scenic riverfronts. A major highlight is the 6.6-kilometer landscaping project, which will extend from Museum Hill to Eastleigh and include modern bridges, well-lit walkways, cycling paths, and other pedestrian-friendly features. This project aims to beautify the river corridor and make it more accessible to the public.

The commission is also spearheading efforts to improve infrastructure in key areas like Kariobangi, Kahawa, and Karen. Expansion plans will focus on enhancing sewer capacity and better wastewater management to reduce pollution levels in the river. Notably, the commission has committed to the conservation of Ondiri Swamp, one of Nairobi’s key water resources, and has pledged to take strict action against river pollution while implementing robust flood control measures.

Collaboration with Nairobi County will be integral in scrutinizing approvals for sewer companies, ensuring stricter adherence to environmental standards. The commission emphasized the importance of community involvement in sustainable practices and the need for strategies to prevent riverbank encroachment, safeguard water bodies, and restore Nairobi’s natural ecosystem.

The meeting concluded with a firm commitment to revitalizing the Nairobi River, promoting sustainable urban growth, and fostering an environmentally friendly cityscape that residents and visitors can enjoy for generations to come.
