CIC Insurance Group, a member of the UN Global Compact Network Kenya and the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance, has released its first sustainability report, underscoring its commitment to sustainable growth and resilience-focused insurance solutions.
The report outlines CIC’s long-term strategy to support climate-conscious risk management, gender equality, and community resilience in line with its 2025-2030 sustainability plan.
At the launch, Group Managing Director and CEO Patrick Nyaga emphasized CIC’s focus on cooperative values.
“Our sustainability strategy is deeply rooted in the cooperative values that shape who we are as an organization. Our solutions are geared towards innovating products that address emerging risks like climate change and tailor them to diverse needs,” Nyaga explained.
The report outlines key goals to be achieved by 2030, including raising CIC’s microinsurance policies to 25% of its portfolio, achieving gender balance in its workforce, and increasing social investment impacts.
The Group has also made environmental strides, such as transitioning to low-carbon technology, retrofitting lighting systems, and installing solar-powered infrastructure at its Ushirika Gardens project.
Chairman Dr. Nelson Kuria highlighted CIC’s contributions to cooperative education, with 40 risk management and financial wellness training sessions delivered to cooperatives. The Group’s insurance products address regional needs, including Kenya’s Co-opcare medical cover, Uganda’s Kameeza funeral expense cover, and Malawi’s Abwenzi health product for women.
CIC’s 2030 targets, guided by four sustainability pillars—Environmental Stewardship, Social Responsibility, Economic Resilience, and Responsible Governance—include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, diverting landfill waste by 25%, achieving 1% workforce representation of persons with disabilities, and reaching a 90% customer satisfaction index.
With this report, CIC Group positions itself as a sustainability leader in Kenya’s insurance sector, committed to creating social impact and advancing climate resilience through innovative insurance solutions.
