World Wetlands Day: A Call to Protect Critical Ecosystems

Wetlands, often called the “cradle of biodiversity,” are vital to life on Earth. They sustain countless species, provide essential ecosystem services, and support millions of livelihoods. Yet, these critical habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate due to urbanization, pollution, and unsustainable practices, posing severe risks to both nature and humanity.
This year, World Wetlands Day is celebrated under the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future”. The theme emphasizes the urgent need for action to conserve these natural habitats, ensuring ecological balance, economic stability, and a sustainable future for generations to come.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), led by Director General Mamo B. Mamo, has been at the forefront of wetland advocacy. Wetlands are indispensable to human survival, acting as natural water filters, regulating floods, combating climate change through carbon storage, and serving as sources of food, water, and medicine.
To secure their future, bold and transformative actions are needed. Governments, organizations, and individuals must prioritize wetland conservation through policy reforms, community-led initiatives, and restoration efforts. Every action matters in protecting these ecosystems.
As we mark World Wetlands Day, let’s recognize the critical role wetlands play in sustaining life and commit to their preservation. Protecting wetlands today ensures a thriving planet for future
