Students Should Not Be Judged by Grades Alone – Joyce Murabu says
Parents have been encouraged to ensure the smooth transition of students who sat the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams by enrolling them in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
Speaking during an interview at Sunrise Training College in Thika, Joyce Murabu, the Managing Director of the institution, emphasized the critical role of technical skills in securing employment and building sustainable careers for the youth.
“All students who sat the examination have a place in life, regardless of the grades they scored. Technical skills open up numerous opportunities for self-employment and job creation. I encourage parents to enroll their children in TVET institutions so they can acquire hands-on skills that are in demand in the job market,” said Murabu.
She further urged parents not to view any student as a failure based on their exam results but to nurture and guide them into pathways that align with their strengths and interests.
“The KCSE results have been released, but I am appealing to parents to ensure all the students transit smoothly. Every student who sat the exam has an opportunity in life, regardless of the grade they got, and they can still have a good future if they transition into the right programs,” she noted.
Murabu highlighted the additional benefits of TVET institutions in promoting national unity, as they bring together students from diverse cultural and regional backgrounds.
“When youths join TVET institutions, they meet and interact with people from different parts of the country. This interaction breaks barriers of tribalism and ethnicity, helping them to understand and appreciate different cultures,” she said.
She noted that at Sunrise Training College, students receive practical training in various fields, including caregiving, health sciences, beauty and cosmetology, fashion and design, computing and informatics, engineering and technology, business studies, hospitality, and defensive driving.
“We take pride in equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in a competitive job market. Our programs are designed to provide practical experience and prepare them for real-world challenges,” Murabu explained.
