The Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) has urged Kenyans to prioritize proper milk handling and hygiene following a poisoning crisis in Kericho County that left 163 people hospitalized. The victims, including children, fell ill after consuming allegedly contaminated mursik (fermented milk) in Kipkelion East.

KDB National Chairman Genesio Mugo confirmed the incident, stating that a multi-agency task force has been deployed to investigate the contamination and support affected families. “Initial findings suggest food poisoning due to improper handling of mursik,” he said.

Mursik, a traditional fermented milk popular among the Kalenjin community, involves adding herbs and ash to milk, which is then fermented in a gourd. While cherished for its cultural significance, its preparation demands strict hygiene and proper storage to prevent contamination.

The KDB emphasized sourcing milk products from reputable suppliers and adhering to hygiene practices during preparation and consumption. “Milk safety is paramount, and consumers must take every precaution to avoid such tragedies,” Mr. Mugo advised.

This incident underscores the need for public education on food safety, particularly for traditional foods. The Kenya Dairy Board and other stakeholders plan to launch awareness campaigns to inform the public about safe milk consumption practices.

Affected families in Lel Sotet, Masaita, and Kabianga areas are receiving medical care as investigations continue. Authorities have assured residents of their commitment to resolving the issue and preventing future occurrences.

The KDB has also urged Kenyans to report suspicious milk products to relevant authorities, stressing that consumer safety remains their top priority.
