Cold Solutions Kenya Earns Prestigious LEED Gold Certification
Cold Solutions Kenya Limited has achieved the esteemed LEED Gold Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), making it the first multipurpose temperature-controlled warehouse in Africa to receive this recognition. The certification, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), highlights the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in cold storage technology.
The Nairobi-based facility, established just two years ago, underwent a rigorous evaluation to meet global green building standards. LEED certification assesses energy efficiency, sustainable materials, indoor environmental quality, and innovation. Achieving the Gold category—the second-highest level—places Cold Solutions on an international platform for sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The warehouse has also received other certifications, including YUM!, FSSC 22000, World Health Organization Good Distribution Practice (GDP), and the Pharmaceutical Poisons Board certification for storing food and pharmaceutical products.
Azhar Rifai, Co-head of Cold Chain Strategy at ARCH Emerging Partners, the investment firm backing Cold Solutions, expressed pride in this milestone. “Being the only temperature-controlled warehouse in Africa to achieve LEED Gold certification is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. This recognition aligns with our goals of reducing carbon emissions, embracing renewable energy, and ensuring environmental responsibility in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Rifai.
The LEED certification process involves a point-based system, with a maximum of 110 points awarded for meeting environmental criteria, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and water reclamation. Facilities achieving more than 80 points earn Platinum status, the highest LEED certification.
Cold Solutions’ state-of-the-art warehouse uses advanced technologies such as ammonia refrigeration and solar power, which significantly minimize greenhouse gas emissions and optimize energy performance. These sustainable practices underscore the company’s role as a pioneer in Africa’s cold storage industry and a model for future green building developments.
This achievement reinforces Cold Solutions Kenya’s leadership in delivering world-class storage solutions while prioritizing environmental stewardship and client sustainability goals.
