The CEO of Texas Cancer Center, Dr. Catherine Nyongesa, has expressed her full support for the government’s push to vaccinate girls under 15 against the human papillomavirus (HPV) in the fight against cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine protects against the virus types responsible for most cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. It is recommended for preteens aged 11 to 12 but can be administered starting as early as age 9.

Dr. Nyongesa commended the government’s commitment to ensuring widespread vaccination for girls under 15, emphasizing the vaccine’s role in reducing the risk of cervical cancer.

“It is critical that all girls below the age of 15 receive the HPV vaccine to safeguard their future health,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of regular cervical cancer screening, urging women aged 25 to 50 to undergo screenings every five years.

“Early detection of precancerous changes through regular screening is vital in combating cervical cancer. Vaccination and screening must go hand in hand to protect lives,” she added.

Dr. Nyongesa concluded by reminding women that even those vaccinated against HPV should continue regular cervical cancer screenings to ensure early detection and effective treatment if needed.

This government initiative, backed by experts like Dr. Nyongesa, marks a significant step toward reducing cervical cancer cases and safeguarding the health of future generations.
