Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) recently welcomed a team from the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) for a critical two-day accreditation assessment of its Civil and Mechanical Engineering programs. The evaluation is part of JKUAT’s pursuit of Washington Accord Recognition, a global benchmark for high-quality engineering education.

The Washington Accord is an international accreditation agreement that recognizes engineering qualifications from member countries as meeting global standards. Achieving this recognition would place JKUAT among an elite group of institutions, enabling its graduates to practice internationally with ease and significantly enhancing their employability and mobility in global markets.

During the visit, EBK assessors held in-depth discussions with faculty and staff from the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC), focusing on curriculum quality, research output, infrastructure, and the overall learning environment. These engagements aimed to ensure that JKUAT’s engineering programs meet the rigorous standards required for accreditation.

“This assessment underscores our commitment to equipping students with globally competitive skills,” said the Principal of COETEC, affirming the university’s dedication to excellence in engineering education.

The EBK team commended JKUAT’s robust engineering programs and expressed optimism about the university’s prospects of achieving Washington Accord accreditation. They emphasized that aligning Kenyan engineering education with global standards would boost the competitiveness of Kenyan engineers in international markets.

As JKUAT awaits the assessment outcome, the institution remains committed to producing world-class engineers capable of addressing modern challenges and contributing to sustainable development. Attaining Washington Accord Recognition will not only enhance JKUAT’s reputation but also empower its graduates to become leaders in the global engineering arena.

This milestone reinforces JKUAT’s position as a leader in technical education and innovation, advancing Kenya’s industrial and technological aspirations.
