Early Screening to Detect Hearing Loss and ENT Conditions

22 January 2025
Nairobi, Kenya – AAR Hospital has introduced specialized ear, nose, and throat (ENT) tests for newborns to enable early detection of hearing complications and related conditions. These screenings, conducted at the Kiambu Road-based hospital, aim to address structural anomalies or infections that may affect breathing, feeding, or hearing in infants.

“These tests ensure early diagnosis of congenital hearing loss or other ENT-related issues, which, if untreated, can impact speech, language development, and overall cognitive growth. Early intervention significantly improves a child’s developmental outcomes and quality of life,” said Dr. Ian Macharia, ENT specialist at AAR Hospital.

The Importance of Early Screening
In Kenya, approximately 1 in every 1,000 newborns is affected by hearing loss, with ENT infections ranking among the leading causes of morbidity in children. However, access to early screening and diagnostic services remains limited, highlighting the importance of AAR Hospital’s initiative.

The ENT tests include:

  • Newborn Hearing Screening: Using Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) or Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) to detect hearing loss.
  • Interventions for Hearing Loss: Options such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or enrollment in early intervention programs.
  • Middle Ear Infections: Treatments include antibiotics or minor surgical procedures like tympanostomy tube insertion for recurrent cases.
  • Structural Anomalies: Referrals for surgical or specialized medical care for issues like cleft palate or narrow ear canals.

Dr. Wakonyo Gicheru, AAR Hospital’s lead pediatrician, noted that all babies born at the hospital would undergo these screenings. “Newborn hearing screenings are more affordable and easier to treat when conducted early. Late diagnostics, like ABR testing, are more complex and costly,” said Dr. Gicheru.

Specialist Pediatric Services to Meet Rising Demand
In December, AAR Hospital launched specialist pediatric clinics to address the growing need for children’s healthcare. These clinics provide a range of services, including regular check-ups, vaccinations, and health screenings for children of all ages, aimed at early diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases.

The rising demand for pediatric care is driven by increasing cases of childhood diseases, congenital disorders, and developmental delays. Early intervention has been proven to significantly improve long-term health outcomes, underscoring AAR Hospital’s commitment to enhancing child healthcare in Kenya.
