Joyce Murabu, the Managing Director of Sunrise Training College in Thika, has urged parents to become more actively involved in their children’s education, stressing that parental engagement is crucial for establishing a solid foundation for their children’s future success.

Speaking at a recent engagement session, Murabu voiced her concern that many parents disengage from their children’s academic journey once they reach college or university, mistakenly believing that their role has ended as their children are now adults who no longer need constant guidance.

“At Sunrise Training College, we are constantly exploring ways to help parents stay engaged in their children’s education. This connection fosters a stronger bond between parents and their children,” she explained.

Murabu emphasized that parental involvement should not cease at the school gate, pointing out that parents continue to play an essential role throughout their children’s education.

“Parents are the first teachers, imparting life lessons to their children when they are young, and this responsibility doesn’t disappear when children enter higher learning institutions. Unfortunately, many parents have lost sight of their significant role in their children’s education and are unsure of how to reclaim it,” she added.

Murabu also highlighted the diverse range of courses offered at Sunrise Training College, including Health Sciences, Fashion and Design, Engineering and Technology, Business Studies, and Hospitality, all designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are in high demand in today’s job market. “These courses provide hands-on training that gives students the tools they need to excel in their careers,” she stated.

She encouraged parents to get involved in their children’s academic life by participating in parent groups and school boards, advocating for the cultivation of core values and guiding principles to help shape their children’s understanding of the world.

“Your children are especially vulnerable during their formative years and as they transition into higher education. Building a strong relationship with schools and teachers is essential for their development. Your role as a parent is irreplaceable, and your involvement is crucial for your children’s success,” Murabu said.

She also warned that failing to monitor their children’s academic progress could result in poor performance, noting that mental and financial support is vital for academic success.

“Parents need to actively support their children’s education. Without proper follow-up, students may become complacent, leading to underperformance,” she cautioned.
