Mount Kenya University (MKU) has achieved a significant milestone after being appointed as the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 Hub Chair for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
The university will hold this prestigious position from January 2025 to December 2027.
According to Maher Nasser, Director of the UNAI Outreach Division, MKU was selected due to its impactful innovation projects that empower students and enhance community development.
Notable initiatives include the Annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fair and sustainable infrastructure projects in collaboration with the government, aligning with the vision of SDG 9.
MKU previously served as the UNAI SDG 10 Hub Chair for Reduced Inequalities for three and a half years, during which it championed inclusivity and accessibility for people living with disabilities.
The university implemented education and employment programs promoting equal opportunities and representation in decision-making processes.
With this new appointment, MKU is poised to lead global efforts in fostering innovation, infrastructure development, and sustainability. The university already operates an Innovation and Incubation Hub, where student-led projects are developed into market-ready solutions.
As it assumes its role as the SDG 9 Hub Chair, MKU reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development, strengthening partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations, and industries to drive practical learning and transformative innovation.
