Raila Odinga’s AUC Defeat: Mixed Reactions as Katoo Ole Metito Celebrates the Lose

The defeat of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in his African Union Commission (AUC) bid has sparked mixed reactions across the country.
While opposition leaders and citizens critical of President William Ruto have expressed disappointment, the most surprising response has come from an unexpected quarter—State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito and his allies, who reportedly celebrated Odinga’s loss.
Odinga suffered a significant setback on Saturday when Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf secured victory in the seventh round of voting. Analysts have attributed the outcome to Kenya’s diplomatic missteps, regional power struggles, and Youssouf’s effective lobbying strategy.
Speaking on Sunday at a dinner hosted in his honor, Odinga graciously conceded defeat, refuting claims that factors such as age, financial constraints, or alleged sabotage by President Ruto contributed to his loss.
Back in Kenya, however, celebrations erupted among Katoo and his political allies, particularly from Kajiado and Central Kenya. Reports suggest that Katoo, who followed the proceedings from a luxury hotel in Nairobi, was in a jubilant mood, even as President Ruto reportedly felt disheartened given his strong support for Odinga’s candidacy.
It has also emerged that Katoo was among senior state officials who initially opposed Odinga’s bid, favoring a younger candidate instead.
These revelations may have significant political implications for Katoo, particularly within the inner circles of government, where support for Odinga’s bid was expected to be unanimous.
