Taita Taveta, Kenya – The 2024-2025 National Wildlife Census is set to kick off with an aerial wildlife count in the Tsavo ecosystem, one of Kenya’s most critical conservation areas. A pre-census briefing at Taita Hills Safari Resort and Spa, the designated Data Centre, brought together key stakeholders to ensure accuracy in data collection.

Participants, including flight teams and conservationists, were trained on species identification, counting techniques, flight safety, and data verification to enhance the reliability of the census.

Dr. Patrick Omondi, Director of the Institute, emphasized Tsavo’s importance, noting that 14,964 elephants were recorded in the 2021 census. The survey will track wildlife population trends, identify endangered species, and support habitat restoration and conservation efforts.

The census, supported by the Tourism Promotion Fund, follows a One-Government approach, uniting agencies such as the Kenya Wildlife Service, Save the Elephants, WWF-Kenya, Tsavo Trust, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and other conservation partners.

Dr. Omondi urged teams to uphold the highest standards in data collection, stating, “The success of this census depends on accuracy, safety, and teamwork. This data will guide conservation strategies for one of Kenya’s most significant wildlife landscapes.”

The census findings will play a vital role in shaping Kenya’s wildlife conservation policies and sustainable ecosystem management.
