NEMA Investigates Dark Smoke Reports at Isiolo Hospital

By John Kariuki
Isiolo, Kenya – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched an investigation following concerns over dark smoke emissions from a hospital in Isiolo town. Reports circulating on social media had raised alarm over potential air pollution from the facility.
A site visit by the NEMA County Director of Environment and a Public Health officer confirmed that while the hospital’s incinerator was functioning properly, visible emissions were observed. Further inspection revealed that medical waste ash had been left near the hospital’s boundary wall, and attempts to water it down may have caused the reported smoke.
To prevent future incidents, NEMA has directed the hospital to construct an ash pit for proper waste disposal and conduct stack emissions tests to comply with the Environmental Management and Coordination (Air Quality) Regulations, 2024.
NEMA remains committed to ensuring environmental compliance and enforcing proper healthcare waste management to protect public health and the environment.
