A Nairobi businessman, Cheekati Narasimha Rao, was arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts today, facing charges of stealing Ksh 254,461,768 from his employer, Printing Services Limited. Rao, who pleaded not guilty to two counts, including forgery, was granted release on a Ksh 3 million cash bail or a Ksh 10 million bond with a surety of the same amount. Additionally, Magistrate Caroline Nyaguthi ordered that his passport remain in court custody until the case is heard and determined.

During the proceedings, the prosecution strongly opposed his release on bond. Kimani Wachira, the lawyer representing the complainant, urged the court to impose strict bail conditions, citing multiple alleged attempts by Rao to flee the country. Wachira argued that the accused had already made three unsuccessful attempts to leave Kenya, a claim supported by an affidavit filed in court. Given this, the prosecution insisted on tighter restrictions to prevent Rao from absconding.

The charges against Rao stem from allegations that, between February 1, 2016, and August 31, 2024, while serving as an employee of Printing Services Limited, he stole over Ksh 254 million from the company. In addition to theft, he is also accused of forging the signature of Managing Director Malkiat Singh Dhillon on an appointment letter dated April 1, 2010. According to the prosecution, this forgery was intended to fraudulently promote himself to the position of Production Manager at the company.

The court has scheduled the next mention of the case for March 12, 2025, where pre-trial directions will be given.
