Majengo Unrest: Police Killing of Teenager Triggers Violent Protests

Tensions escalated in Majengo and Pumwani on Wednesday morning after a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot during a police operation, sparking violent protests. The unrest saw a police vehicle and parts of the Shauri Moyo police station set ablaze.
Eyewitnesses described the teenager as unarmed and an innocent bystander when police opened fire, fueling public outrage. Residents took to the streets in defiance, demanding justice.
“This was a young boy with a future ahead of him,” said Amina Hassan, a witness. “We are tired of living in fear. The police are supposed to protect us, not kill our children.”
Riot police were deployed in large numbers, using tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. Running battles between police and residents lasted for hours, with several people injured in the chaos.
Nairobi County Police Commander Joseph Otieno urged calm, stating, “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. We urge residents to remain calm as we gather the facts.”

Protests continued to simmer, with authorities on high alert to prevent further escalation. Community leaders called for calm, while the victim’s family demanded justice.
“I just want answers,” said the boy’s mother, Fatuma Njeri, tears streaming down her face. “Why did they kill my son? He was just a child.”
