Storm in Football: Korogocho MCA Demands Apology from Shabana FC Fans

Korogocho Member of County Assembly (MCA) Absalom Odhiambo, popularly known as Matach, has issued a stern warning to Shabana FC fans following their heckling of ODM leader Raila Odinga at Gusii Stadium.
The legislator has demanded an official apology within 24 hours, failure to which he has threatened retaliation from Gor Mahia fans when the two teams meet.
“If you are not going to apologize, we will deal with you properly,” Matach warned, emphasizing that the disrespect towards Odinga would not go unpunished.
Matach, known for his outspoken nature, expressed his outrage over the incident, describing it as a deliberate act of belittling the former Prime Minister. He further accused Kisii Governor Amos Nyaribo and Fred Matiang’i’s brother of orchestrating the disruption, implying a coordinated effort to embarrass Odinga in his presence.
The MCA, who recently made headlines for leading a group of Nairobi MCAs in storming the Controller of Budget offices over delayed bursary funds, maintained that ODM supporters, particularly those from Gor Mahia’s fan base, would not sit idly by while their leader was disrespected.
The incident at Gusii Stadium has sparked political tensions, with ODM loyalists viewing the act as an affront to Odinga’s leadership and influence in the region. Shabana FC fans, however, have not yet issued any official response to the ultimatum.
This confrontation highlights the deep-rooted political affiliations within Kenyan football fan bases, with Gor Mahia traditionally aligned with ODM and Shabana FC enjoying support from Kisii County, a region with shifting political loyalties.
As the standoff escalates, it remains to be seen whether the fans will heed the call for an apology or brace themselves for a heated face-off with Gor Mahia supporters.
Political observers warn that such tensions, if not managed properly, could spill over into violence during upcoming matches, further entrenching divisions in both sports and politics.
