Govt Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining as CS Joho Issues Tough Directives

The Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy & Maritime Affairs, Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, alongside PS Mining Elijah Mwangi, met with Regional Mining Officers (RMOs) to assess mining sector reforms and intensify the fight against illegal mining in Kenya.
CS Joho labeled illegal mining a major national threat and ordered RMOs to take full responsibility for all mining activities in their regions. He directed them to enforce strict compliance with the Mining Act Cap 306, collaborate with law enforcement, and strengthen multi-agency efforts to eradicate illegal operations.
Key directives included:
✅ Issuing demand letters to illegal miners for payment on illegally exploited minerals.
✅ Embedding geologists from the Directorate of Geological Survey in major road and dam projects to assess mineral deposits.
✅ Creating an investment-friendly environment by eliminating illegal miners and attracting large-scale investors.
Senior officials present included Secretary Geological Survey Enoch Kipseba, Director of Mining Gregory Kituku, and Director of Planning Paul Mirie.
The government remains committed to streamlining the mining sector and maximizing its economic potential.
