The King of the Netherlands, His Majesty Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima, on Tuesday, visited the Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD) to witness the launch of Kenya Railways’ latest wagons.

The Kenyan Government, under the Roads and Transport Ministry, is spearheading the creation of a Cool Logistics Corridor, which will facilitate the efficient movement of fresh farm produce and other perishables to and from Kenya’s hinterland.

Kenya Railways MD Philip Mainga ,said that ,KR has introduced Reefer wagons designed to enhance the transportation of perishable goods,adding that the wagons are equipped with real-time temperature monitoring systems to ensure cargo remains fresh throughout the journey.

Fresh produce from various Fresh Produce Consolidation Centres will now be transported via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the Port of Mombasa, where it will be shipped to European markets, including the Netherlands.

“The arrangement guarantees the perishable cargo will remain fresh throughout the journey as the rolling stock includes real-time temperature monitoring systems,” Kenya Railways stated,’’Mainga stated.

King Willem-Alexander’s visit underscores the strong bilateral relations between Kenya and the Netherlands, particularly in agricultural trade. The move is expected to enhance trade opportunities and strengthen Kenya’s position as a leading exporter of horticultural produce to Europe.
