Makueni County has taken a major step toward enhancing drought resilience and water security with the commissioning of the Uyi Earth Dam in Masongaleni Ward, Kibwezi East. The Ksh. 54 million project was officially launched by Principal Secretary for ASALs and Regional Development, PS Kello Harsama, alongside Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu, and other leaders.
With a storage capacity of 154,745 cubic meters, the dam is expected to benefit over 78,000 residents and provide water for 23,000 livestock. The project will improve household water access, support small-scale agriculture, and enhance food security in the drought-prone region.
PS Harsama emphasized the government’s commitment to resilience-building in ASAL areas, noting that reliable water access is key to economic empowerment and agricultural growth. Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. hailed the dam as a game-changer, ensuring sustainable water supply for domestic and farming needs.
This initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader agenda to improve water resource management in arid and semi-arid regions, reinforcing the collaboration between national and county governments in tackling climate-related challenges.
