Nairobi, Kenya – 28.03.2025 – The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has condemned remarks made by Trans Nzoia CEC Phanice Naliaka, calling them disrespectful and damaging to gender equality efforts.

In a statement, KEWOPA argued that Naliaka’s comments trivialize women’s leadership and reinforce harmful stereotypes, particularly regarding survivors of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

“Women in leadership are defined by vision, competence, and service—not outdated perceptions rooted in harmful practices,” KEWOPA stated, adding that such rhetoric undermines Kenya’s progress in combating gender discrimination.

The association demanded an immediate retraction and a public apology, urging leaders to use their platforms to advance women’s rights rather than spread inflammatory narratives.

“As leaders, we must uphold the dignity of all women and champion policies that promote equality and respect for human rights,” said Hon. Leah Sankaire, KEWOPA’s Chairperson.

With pressure mounting, many now await Naliaka’s response, as KEWOPA remains firm in its commitment to protecting women’s dignity and rights.
