Senator Veronica Maina has raised alarm over the financial crisis at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), warning that impending staff layoffs and contractual changes could undermine education quality and staff welfare.

She has called on the Senate Committee on Education to clarify the university’s restructuring plans, including how the proposed staff reduction to 893 employees by 2027/2028 will affect operations. Additionally, she has demanded a breakdown of how the projected Ksh 2.44 billion savings will contribute to the institution’s financial stability.

The senator is also questioning the legal basis for changing employment terms, including contract renewals, gratuity payments, and the shift to part-time lecturers. She has urged the committee to provide transparency on the selection process for terminations, compensation plans, and engagement with unions and stakeholders.

Furthermore, Sen. Maina has sought details on the government’s strategy for stabilizing public universities and ensuring sustainable funding. She has also requested a report on alternative revenue-generating measures that TUK is considering to reduce its reliance on government funding.
