The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has initiated a weeklong training workshop to accelerate the registration of graduate engineers as Professional Engineers. This effort aligns with EBK’s goal of registering 10,000 Professional Engineers by 2027 to bridge Kenya’s engineering deficit.

EBK Chairman, Eng. Erastus Mwongera, highlighted that Kenya has only 4,000 registered Professional Engineers—far below the UNESCO-recommended ratio of one engineer per 5,000 people. He urged graduate engineers to seek registration, noting that professional certification enhances career prospects and contributes to national development.

EBK Registrar and CEO, Eng. Margaret Ogai, reinforced the Board’s commitment to capacity building, with a target of registering 600 Professional Engineers this fiscal year. She emphasized that Professional Engineers gain global recognition and benefit from the liberalization of engineering services.

“The Board continues to regulate the profession, enforce ethical standards, and oversee university engineering programs, 90% of which are now accredited,” Eng. Ogai stated.

The workshop has attracted participants from key institutions, including the Kenya National Highways Authority, Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA), and Mombasa County Government.

With Kenya’s rising infrastructure needs, EBK’s initiative is a crucial step toward ensuring a highly qualified engineering workforce capable of driving sustainable development.
