Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to maritime security cooperation with India as the two nations mark India’s National Maritime Day. Geoffrey Kaituko, Kenya’s Deputy Head of Mission in Rome and outgoing Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, praised the growing collaboration between Kenya and India in securing the Indian Ocean.

Speaking on the occasion, Kaituko congratulated Indian High Commissioner Namgya Khampa and highlighted key joint initiatives such as IOS Sagar and AIKEYME, which enhance regional maritime security. He commended India and Tanzania for their roles in these efforts, emphasizing their impact on naval preparedness.

Kenya and India’s maritime partnership has strengthened significantly in recent years. In 2023, four Indian Navy ships docked at Mombasa, and in December, INS Sumedha became the first Indian warship to call at Port Lamu. In May 2024, the Indian Navy provided emergency aid to Kenya during devastating floods, further solidifying the alliance.

Currently, six Kenya Navy personnel are training aboard INS Sunayna, while two Kenya Navy ships, Jasiri and Shupavu, participated in AIKEYME exercises alongside Indian forces. These joint exercises improve regional security coordination.

As Kaituko transitions from his role, he expressed confidence that Kenya-India maritime ties will continue to grow, ensuring a safer and more secure Indian Ocean region.
