Kisumu Boda Boda Rider Fights for National Glory

Lameck Okumu, a boda boda rider from Kisumu, is determined to ride his way to the top—literally and figuratively. With novice and intermediate boxing titles already under his belt, Okumu now has his sights set on the Kenya Open Championships in Nairobi later this month.
A Fighter’s Journey
Balancing a grueling training schedule with his day job as a boda boda rider, Okumu has defied the odds to emerge as a formidable force in the ring. His rise from a local boxing enthusiast to a contender for the national team has not been easy, but his resilience continues to fuel his ambitions.
“I wake up before dawn to train, then spend the day ferrying passengers to earn a living before returning to the gym in the evening,” Okumu says. “It’s tough, but my dream is bigger than my struggles.”
The Road to the Championships
Okumu’s biggest challenge now is stepping up to the super-heavyweight division, where he will face seasoned national fighters. He acknowledges the difficulty but remains confident in his ability to compete at the highest level.
“This is my moment. I have trained hard, and I believe I can hold my own against the best,” he asserts.
Overcoming the Odds
Despite financial constraints and limited resources, Okumu remains undeterred. He hopes to secure sponsorship to ease his training costs and travel expenses. Local boxing fans are rallying behind him, eager to see their own make history in Nairobi.
Will he conquer the big boys and earn a spot on the national team? All eyes will be on Nairobi to see if Kisumu’s rising star can land the ultimate knockout.
