The National Construction Authority (NCA) has vowed to take legal action after a four-storey building collapsed in Itierio, Kisii County, on April 6, 2025, killing five people and injuring three others.

The building, constructed by John Chore, was not registered with the NCA, and there were no contractor or consultant details on record. The Nyanza South NCA team had suspended construction on September 3, 2024, due to safety violations, but the developer ignored the order and resumed work without clearance.

Emergency teams, including NCA officials, county officers, and the National Police Service, have secured the site. Preliminary investigations suggest that poor workmanship and excessive weight from construction materials on upper floors caused the structure to fail.

“This tragedy could have been avoided if regulations were followed,” said Eng. Maurice Akech, Executive Director at NCA. “We will not tolerate developers who ignore safety standards. Legal action will be taken against those responsible.”

This is the third major building collapse in a week, with similar incidents reported in Mombasa and Suneka, Kisii County. The NCA has launched a full investigation and is intensifying efforts to enforce stricter compliance with building regulations to prevent further tragedies.
