KWS Director General, Prof. Erustus Kanga, led the discussions at both institutions, accompanied by Prof. Yan Xue from the Sino-African Joint Research Center, Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences. They were received by Chuka University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry M. M’Ikiugu, and Tharaka University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi.
The partnership will focus on key areas, including:
✅ Climate-smart agricultural practices
✅ Biodiversity restoration and conservation

Speaking during the meetings, Prof. Kanga emphasized the need for strategic alliances to safeguard Kenya’s wildlife and ecosystems. “By combining research, technology, and local expertise, we can create long-term solutions that benefit both people and nature,” he stated.
The partnership is expected to open up job opportunities for local communities, improve agricultural yields through modern techniques, and expand wildlife corridors. Additionally, it will ensure sustainable water and land use practices, aligning with the Kenya Wildlife Service Strategic Plan 2024–2028.
Prof. Kanga delivered a keynote presentation titled “Thriving Wildlife and Healthy Habitats for All, Forever – Making Peace with Nature.” The speech highlighted KWS’s commitment to conservation efforts that balance human activities with nature preservation.
Both universities expressed optimism about the collaboration, committing to fast-track frameworks for implementation. The initiative is expected to drive research, innovation, and environmental stewardship, ensuring long-term ecological and economic benefits for Kenya.
