Kenya reaffirmed its leadership in Africa’s economic transformation as President William Ruto graced a historic trade forum hosted by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) in Nairobi. The event, the first of its kind in Africa, focused on strengthening intra-Africa trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

KNCCI Director Shakir Swaleh Mohamed, representing the Coast Region, emphasized the forum’s significance, highlighting Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, and Kilifi as key economic gateways for AfCFTA. “We are committed to fostering business growth and unlocking Africa’s vast trade potential,” said Mohamed.

Currently, only 17% of Africa’s trade happens within the continent, compared to 67% in Europe. This event aimed to address such disparities by encouraging stronger trade ties and economic integration across African nations.

President Ruto underscored Kenya’s commitment to leading Africa’s economic shift. “The future of Africa lies in how well we trade with one another. We must eliminate barriers that hinder economic progress,” he stated.

With Africa facing challenges like unemployment and underdevelopment, AfCFTA presents an opportunity to create jobs, boost industries, and grow economies. The Coast Region’s strategic position as a trade hub will play a crucial role in realizing these ambitions.

The forum brought together policymakers, business leaders, and trade experts, setting the stage for a new era of African economic collaboration with Kenya at the forefront.
