MPs Question KURA Over Delayed Likoni Road Bridge Project

The Public Investments Committee on Commercial Affairs & Energy, chaired by Hon. David Pkosing (Pokot South), has raised concerns over delays in the construction of the Likoni Road Bridge during an inspection visit to the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
During the visit, Hon. Pkosing stressed the importance of timely completion of government projects to ensure value for taxpayers.
“Every government project should be completed within the required timeline and be useful to the people of Kenya,” he said.
The committee, accompanied by KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti and Kenya Railways Corporation’s Eng. Mwania Mativo, reviewed the Likoni Road Bridge, Enterprise Road, and Shreeji Road projects, which have been flagged by the Auditor General over delays.
According to the Auditor General’s report, the Kshs. 892 million contract for the roadworks was awarded in September 2020, with an expected completion date of September 30, 2022. However, the project remains incomplete.
Eng. Kinoti informed the committee that major works had been finalized, with 86% of Enterprise Road and 73% of Shreeji Road completed. He explained that the Likoni Bridge expansion was delayed due to new height requirements from Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC).
MPs, including Hon. Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town) and Hon. John Ariko (Turkana South), questioned whether KURA would cover additional costs. Eng. Kinoti clarified that the bridge expansion was not included in the initial budget and would require additional funding.
The committee directed KURA to complete the project by June 2025, with the bridge expansion to be considered when implementing the electric railway project.
“The government invested in this project to ease traffic congestion in the Industrial Area, and the public must get value for money,” Hon. Pkosing concluded.
