Kisii County, April 11, 2025 — A group of Women Members of Parliament has demanded the immediate closure of Magena Dispensary in Kisii County following the death of an expectant mother, Phanice Nyaboke, and her unborn twins—allegedly due to negligence.

Led by Kisii County MP Hon. Dorice Donya, the lawmakers expressed shock at the state of the facility during a visit, citing poor infrastructure, lack of clean water, no lighting in delivery rooms, and overall neglect.

“This dispensary is not fit for human service. The delivery rooms have no lights and staff fetch water in jerry cans,” said Hon. Donya, who criticized the dispensary as a contributor to Kisii’s high maternal mortality rate.

According to Nyaboke’s mother, her daughter was left unattended for over 24 hours despite being in prolonged labour.

Nominated MP Hon. Irene Mayaka demanded swift accountability: “Someone must answer for this loss. Every woman has a constitutional right to safe healthcare.”

Other legislators, including Hon. Ruth Odinga, Hon. Lilian Siyoi, and Hon. Jerusha Momanyi, criticized the lack of emergency referral protocols, unsafe conditions, and outdated infrastructure. Hon. Momanyi described the facility as “a cow shed,” while Hon. Siyoi decried it as worse than pre-digital era wards.

The MPs called on the Ministry of Health to intervene urgently, and for Magena Dispensary to be shut down and renovated before resuming operations. Local leaders and administrators who attended the meeting supported the MPs’ call, urging immediate government action to prevent further maternal deaths.

The lawmakers pledged to continue pushing for dignified maternal care across the country.
