Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to ecotourism as a key strategy for sustainable tourism growth, emphasizing the vital role of local communities in shaping the country’s travel landscape.
Speaking passionately about the future of Kenyan tourism, CS Miano underscored the importance of placing communities at the heart of tourism development. “Tourism is not just about the destinations—it’s about the people who call those places home,” she said.
Miano stressed that community-based ecotourism not only boosts local economies but also strengthens cultural preservation and environmental conservation. She encouraged travellers to take simple but impactful steps—such as hiring local guides, supporting community-owned restaurants, and purchasing locally made crafts—to ensure their tourism spend benefits grassroots communities.
“These small acts have a ripple effect,” she noted. “They empower rural communities, promote cultural exchange, and sustain our natural heritage.”
Under her leadership, the Ministry has pushed for policies that promote responsible tourism aligned with Kenya’s conservation goals. Miano’s push for immersive travel experiences through the “Magical Kenya” brand continues to gain traction globally, positioning Kenya as a leader in sustainable tourism.
“Community tourism is about building lasting relationships between visitors and hosts,” she added. “It fosters respect, understanding, and shared responsibility for protecting our biodiversity and cultural legacy.”
