Nairobi, Kenya — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has launched a high-level National Consultation in Nairobi to fast-track the harmonization of Kenya’s education and skills recognition systems with the IGAD Regional Qualifications Framework (IRQF).

The consultation, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education, regulators, TVET institutions, universities, and development partners, aims to align the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) with regional standards. The effort seeks to boost cross-border mobility, improve employability, and foster lifelong learning across the IGAD member states.

“Education and training are cornerstones of economic transformation and regional integration,” said one Ministry of Education official, emphasizing the need for alignment with labor market demands and the Vision 2030 agenda.

The KNQF, managed by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), provides a structure for classifying and validating academic, technical, and vocational qualifications. The national dialogue highlighted strategic themes such as governance of qualifications, digital and micro-credentials, and the recognition of prior learning (RPL).

IGAD’s IRQF, once adopted across the region, is expected to serve as a unifying platform for standardizing qualifications and ensuring consistency in education quality, thereby creating a more competitive regional workforce.

Stakeholders identified the need for stronger coordination, policy reforms, and capacity-building to ensure seamless interoperability between national and regional frameworks. As IGAD pushes for regional cohesion, the consultation marks a vital step in unlocking human capital and reinforcing Kenya’s role in shaping a skilled, mobile, and future-ready workforce.
