Rose Museo Champions Disability Rights, Applauds KEWOPA’s Inclusive Development Push

Makueni County Woman Representative Hon. Rose Museo has thrown her support behind the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) in its continued efforts to strengthen disability rights and promote inclusive development nationwide.
Speaking in response to a recent advocacy forum hosted by KEWOPA in collaboration with Women Challenged to Challenge (WCC), Hon. Museo hailed the initiative as timely and impactful. The event brought together legislators and representatives from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) to strategize on implementing inclusive reforms and ensuring full alignment with Kenya’s 2010 Constitution and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
“Disability becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives,” stated the KEWOPA Chairperson, stressing the need for gender-responsive and people-centered reforms in legislation, budgeting, and oversight.
KEWOPA Executive Director Mercy Mwangi underscored the importance of monitoring the budget cycle to ensure adequate resources are allocated to disability programs. “Rights must be matched by resources,” she affirmed.
A central focus of the forum was the Persons with Disabilities Act 2023, which has passed both houses of Parliament and now awaits presidential assent. Once enacted, the law will strengthen Kenya’s commitment to disability inclusion by harmonizing local legal frameworks with global standards.
Hon. Museo reiterated her support for inclusive development, pledging to continue advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities. “Every Kenyan must be part of our national progress, regardless of ability,” she concluded.
