Wangige Market Set for Major Upgrade as Kabete MP Leads Transformation Talks

Kabete MP Githua Wamacukuru has reaffirmed his commitment to revitalizing local trade through the transformation of Wangige Market. On April 22, 2025, the MP hosted a high-level stakeholders forum at his constituency office to deliberate on the design, relocation plan, and construction timeline for the modernized market.
The meeting brought together Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) officials led by Regional Director Don Kagicha, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development representatives, and Wangige traders. Kagicha unveiled plans for modern stalls, expanded storage, and upgraded sanitation facilities, designed to improve safety, hygiene, and efficiency.
“Our goal is to create a world-class market that enhances the experience for both traders and customers,” Kagicha said.
Traders raised concerns over income loss during construction and called for phased relocation to ensure business continuity. In response, MP Wamacukuru announced the formation of a relocation task force to oversee fair allocation of temporary stalls and ensure no trader is left behind. “We will coordinate with local authorities to provide alternative sites and necessary support,” he assured.
Ministry officials acknowledged project delays due to funding approvals and pledged to expedite procurement and regulatory clearances. They also announced a joint oversight committee to monitor progress and resolve bottlenecks.
Wamacukuru emphasized the project’s role in sustainable urban development and economic empowerment. “This market upgrade is not just infrastructure—it’s an investment in our people and their future,” he stated.
Construction is set to begin in July 2025 and conclude by late 2026, aligning with national efforts to modernize urban markets and boost local economies. The MP committed to monthly reviews and community engagement to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the project.
