Dr. Samuel Maimbo: A Visionary for Africa’s Future, Poised to Lead the AfDB

By John Kariuki
In the highly anticipated race for the African Development Bank (AfDB) presidency, one name continues to rise above the rest—Dr. Samuel Maimbo, a distinguished Zambian economist with a clear, transformative vision for Africa’s economic future. With growing support from across the continent and a proven track record of delivering real impact, Maimbo is widely regarded as the frontrunner in the race to lead one of Africa’s most influential financial institutions.
Backed by key regional blocs including the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Maimbo has built a formidable coalition of support. His ability to forge consensus among diverse African nations and leaders speaks to his deep diplomatic acumen and policy leadership.
Maimbo’s campaign is not grounded in promises, but in proven action. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the successful mobilization of $93 billion in development aid, with 60% of it directly benefiting Africa—a feat that showcased his unmatched ability to attract global resources for the continent. His leadership in initiatives such as Making Finance Work for Africa, and his technical command in capital markets and disaster risk finance, further cement his status as one of Africa’s most capable economic minds.
At the heart of Maimbo’s vision is a shift from aid dependency to private sector-driven growth. He champions employment-generating industries, particularly agriculture, while prioritizing intra-African trade, infrastructure development, and domestic resource mobilization to create sustainable, inclusive growth.
While his candidacy enjoys widespread support, the race remains competitive. His key rival, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania, has the backing of France, given his presidency of BADEA up until mid-April—where he used the position to lobby for the Presidency of the AfDB, notably as the only candidate not to resign or take leave to campaign.
As the AfDB election draws near, diplomatic strategy and regional unity will play decisive roles. But with his quiet confidence, unwavering continental backing, and a results-oriented agenda, Dr. Maimbo is well-positioned to make history—not just as a leader, but as a catalyst for Africa’s transformation.
Should he ascend to the presidency, Dr. Samuel Maimbo will not only become the second Zambian and third Southern African to lead the AfDB—he will also usher in a bold new era of economic resilience, regional integration, and African-led development.
