Nyeri, Kenya — May 16, 2025
Lands Cabinet Secretary Hon. Alice Wahome today spearheaded a major tree-planting campaign in Gathiuru Forest, Nyeri County, leading government officials and residents in planting 10,000 tree seedlings as part of Kenya’s wider reforestation push.
Nyeri, which leads nationally with 40.89% forest cover and 45.17% tree cover, was hailed by the CS as a model county—but she urged locals not to relent in the effort to restore the environment.
“Despite these impressive numbers, we must continue this journey. Planting trees must become part of our culture,” said CS Wahome.
The event brings Nyeri County’s total contribution to 219,400 seedlings, advancing the national target of 15 billion trees by 2032.
Also in attendance were Nyeri County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi, County Forest Conservator Esther Mugo, and Murang’a nominated MCA Diana Muthoni, along with senior officials from the State Department for Lands and Physical Planning.
Earlier in the week, CS Wahome led a similar drive in Laikipia County, demonstrating the Ministry’s commitment to environmental restoration across the country.
