PS Charles Hinga Steers Landmark Mukuru Housing Project to Life

NAIROBI, Kenya – Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga on Monday commissioned 1,080 affordable housing units at the New Mukuru Housing Estate, a major milestone in Kenya’s mission to deliver decent housing for all.
PS Hinga, the architect of the Affordable Housing Programme, described the event as “a dream come true” for more than 1,000 families transitioning from informal settlements to dignified living.
“Today is not just about buildings. It’s about dignity, opportunity, and inclusion,” Hinga said. “These families now have homes they can proudly call their own, with a rent-to-own plan spread over 30 years.”
President William Ruto, who presided over the handover, called it one of the most meaningful moments of his political career.
“These are not just keys to open houses—these are keys to new lives,” said the President. “This is Kenya’s Bottom-Up moment—bold, transformative, and people-first.”
Also in attendance was Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development CS Alice Wahome, who praised the development as a shift toward equity and social justice.
“This is not just infrastructure. This is social transformation,” she said. “We are building more than homes—we’re building futures.”
The Mukuru project is the largest real estate development in Kenya’s history, set to deliver 13,248 units. The completed Lot 1 features 5,616 bedsitters. Lot 2 will offer 3,024 one-bedroom units, while Lot 3 will add 4,608 two-bedroom homes.
Hinga noted the broader impact: more than 200 similar projects are underway nationwide, employing over 200,000 people—most of them youth.
“The housing sector is now a key driver of jobs, investment, and national pride,” he said. “Mukuru is proof that when we invest in people, we build the nation.”
As the lead technocrat behind the affordable housing agenda, Hinga continues to shape policy, mobilize resources, and deliver results. The New Mukuru Housing Estate stands as a testament to his leadership—and to the government’s promise of decent housing for every Kenyan.
