PS Kello Harsama Launches Water and Tree Planting Projects in ASAL Regions

Principal Secretary for the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development, Kello Harsama, has launched a series of critical development projects aimed at improving water access and boosting climate resilience in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands.
During a visit to the region, PS Harsama commissioned two solar-powered boreholes—at Saramek and Mutwot School—that will supply clean, reliable water to over 4,000 households. The boreholes are expected to ease the daily burden on women and children who often walk long distances for water. They will also benefit nearby schools, improving hygiene and helping boost student attendance.
“These projects are not just about water,” said PS Harsama. “They represent better health, greater dignity, and more opportunity for our people—especially in underserved regions.”

Alongside the water projects, the Principal Secretary distributed 40,000 tree seedlings to local schools. The move is part of a larger reforestation and climate action effort aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems and promoting environmental stewardship among young people. Students and communities will take the lead in planting and caring for the trees.
The twin focus on water access and environmental recovery reflects the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which emphasizes inclusive and community-driven development. PS Harsama highlighted that these projects aim to build long-term resilience in regions hit hardest by climate change.
“By integrating clean water access and climate restoration, we’re strengthening the foundations of sustainability in ASAL communities,” he added.
The initiatives signal a step forward in bridging inequality and improving living conditions in Kenya’s most vulnerable regions, combining practical infrastructure with long-term environmental goals.
