Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has called for deeper collaboration between Kenya and Uganda to promote cultural and sports tourism as a key driver of regional integration and economic growth.

Speaking during a regional tourism dialogue, CS Miano said the two countries offer complementary experiences that, when marketed together, can position East Africa as a leading global destination.

“Kenya’s Swahili coastal heritage and vibrant cities align perfectly with Uganda’s traditional kingdoms and rich cultural history,” she said. “Together, we offer a uniquely diverse yet cohesive tourism experience.”

Miano emphasized that coordinated investment, joint marketing, and shared platforms—such as regional expos—can unlock the sector’s full potential. She highlighted tourism’s unique ability to unite communities, preserve heritage, and create sustainable livelihoods.

Her remarks come ahead of the 2025 Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE), where regional stakeholders will showcase their offerings and strengthen cross-border partnerships.

“Tourism is not just about travel—it’s about identity, pride, and connection,” she added. “By leveraging our shared cultural strengths and promoting sports as part of the tourism mix, we can enrich visitor experiences while strengthening ties between our nations.”

Miano’s call aligns with East Africa’s broader efforts to create unified tourism strategies, support regional integration, and boost global competitiveness. As cultural and sports tourism continues to gain prominence, Kenya and Uganda are well-positioned to lead the way.
