Diaspora PS Roseline Njogu Meets UK Labor Abuse Authority to Protect Kenyan Migrant Workers

By John Kariuki
Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Njogu, met with officials from the United Kingdom’s Labor Abuse Authority (LAA) in London to deepen bilateral collaboration focused on safeguarding Kenyan migrant workers.
The strategic meeting centered on joint efforts to combat labor exploitation and human trafficking. PS Njogu reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad, particularly those in vulnerable employment situations.
Key proposals from the discussions include a formal partnership between the State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA) and the LAA. This partnership will focus on information sharing, support for victims, and tighter oversight of labor recruitment practices.
Both parties agreed on the urgent need to address unethical recruitment and reduce the financial burdens placed on migrant workers, which often lead to debt bondage. They also emphasized the importance of educating Kenyan workers in the UK about their rights and the channels available for redress.
PS Njogu highlighted the value of leveraging the LAA’s enforcement expertise to strengthen Kenya’s diaspora protection framework and promote ethical labor migration.
Also present were Amb. Dr. Joseph Warui (Deputy Head of Mission, Kenya High Commission in London), Amb. Isaiah Kabira (Secretary for Skills, Investments and Entrepreneurship), Mr. Dick J. Safari (Director of Legal Affairs), Mr. Ali Mambo (First Counsellor), and Mr. Cohen Mung’ala (Foreign Service Officer).
This meeting marks a significant step in enhancing Kenya-UK cooperation on labor rights and reinforces the government’s proactive stance on diaspora protection and ethical labor practices.
