Kilifi, Kenya – May 30, 2025
Kilifi Deputy Governor Her Excellency Flora Mbetsa Chibule has lauded the Fanikisha Widows Initiative, a transformative grassroots movement dedicated to empowering widows across Malindi Sub-county and Sabaki Ward in Magarini. This initiative is driving impactful change by fostering social, economic, and political inclusion for some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

Speaking at a meeting today with the initiative’s leadership — including Mama Dadu, Beatrice Nyadzua, and Amina Kopa — Deputy Governor Chibule praised the group’s unwavering commitment to creating pathways of self-sufficiency and solidarity. With 61 active groups, the Fanikisha Widows Initiative has emerged as a vital support network for widows in the region.

At the heart of its success is a savings-based loan model that enables women to build capital, fund small businesses, and meet critical needs in their communities. The initiative also provides training, support services, and opportunities that empower widows to participate fully in economic and civic life.

The Fanikisha Widows Initiative’s impact has been amplified through partnerships, particularly with the County Government of Kilifi and the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development Project (KEMFSED). This collaboration focuses on promoting sustainable livelihoods, enhancing community welfare, and expanding access to essential services.

Deputy Governor Chibule expressed her honor at being invited to the official launch of the Fanikisha Widows Sacco, set for 28th June 2025. The Sacco’s formation is a landmark achievement in the journey toward financial independence, collective empowerment, and long-term economic resilience for widows in the region.

“The County Government is committed to supporting community-driven development,” Chibule affirmed.
“Initiatives like Fanikisha are central to addressing inequality and fostering inclusive growth. We will continue collaborating to expand their impact and ensure no vulnerable group is left behind.”

As Kilifi embraces a culture of participatory development, the Fanikisha Widows Initiative stands as a beacon of what’s possible when communities unite to uplift each other.
