The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), under the leadership of Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti, has completed the installation of a chicane on Banda Lane—delivering a vital safety upgrade for schoolchildren and pedestrians near Banda School.

Installed in 2024, the chicane was designed to slow down traffic in a high-footfall area, significantly reducing speeding and improving driver discipline. It’s part of KURA’s people-first approach to urban infrastructure, where road safety and community well-being take center stage.

“Our roads must protect the most vulnerable—especially children,” said Eng. Kinoti during a recent site visit. “Modern infrastructure must reflect safety, responsibility, and inclusivity.”

The project has been widely praised by Banda School and local residents, who say it has restored a sense of safety in the area. Eng. Kinoti credited the school and community for their active role in shaping the intervention, calling them “co-architects” of safer streets.

This initiative is one of many across the country led by KURA to address risks in school zones and densely populated areas. By integrating technical expertise with grassroots input, Eng. Kinoti is steering KURA beyond road construction—toward community-centered urban design.

The Banda Lane project stands as a model of how responsive leadership and smart engineering can work together to save lives.
