Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti has overseen the successful installation of a traffic calming chicane on Banda Lane, Nairobi—an intervention aimed at improving road safety near Banda School.

The chicane, installed in 2024, has helped reduce speeding and improve pedestrian safety, particularly for school children. Kinoti said the project reflects KURA’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure that protects vulnerable road users.

“Our roads must prioritize safety, especially for children. Infrastructure is not just about vehicles—it’s about people,” Kinoti noted during a recent inspection of the site.

The Banda School community has welcomed the project, citing enhanced discipline among drivers and a stronger sense of security in the area. Kinoti praised the school and local residents for their collaboration, calling them “co-architects in the mission of building safer urban spaces.”

The Banda Lane project is part of a broader KURA strategy to implement targeted safety measures in high-risk areas, especially around schools. Kinoti’s leadership has emphasized people-centered urban planning and smart road design that integrates safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

As similar projects roll out across the country, Banda Lane stands as a model for how technical expertise and community input can create meaningful change.

With continued focus on safety, KURA under Eng. Kinoti is redefining what it means to build roads—not just for mobility, but for protection and public well-being.
