Stop Hiding Behind Broken Systems’ – MP Wamuchomba Demands Arrest of Senior Officer in Albert Ojwang Case

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has fiercely called for the immediate arrest of the senior police officer who ordered the transfer of blogger-teacher Albert Ojwang from Migori to Nairobi, after Ojwang died in custody under suspicious circumstances.
Wamuchomba condemned the transfer as “illegal” and “abusive,” asking, “What is so special about the cells in Nairobi that the ones in Migori could not accommodate?” She urged, “The police must stop acting above the law. That officer belongs in prison, not in uniform.”
Ojwang was arrested in Homa Bay for allegedly posting false information about Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. He was transported more than 300 km to Nairobi, and within 24 hours was found unconscious in his cell and later pronounced dead at Mbagathi Hospital. Police claim he died after hitting his head against the cell wall, but the narrative is being widely challenged.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) have launched investigations. The police have suspended the station’s OCS and several officers, with the IPOA collecting CCTV footage and forensics, including blood-stained belongings, to establish what happened.
Civil society groups and MPs are intensifying calls for transparency and justice. Wamuchomba’s stand reflects growing public outrage over alleged police impunity and human rights abuses.
As Kenyans await the outcome of the post-mortem and investigations, pressure mounts on authorities to hold accountable anyone found responsible and to uphold citizens’ rights—even in custody.
