Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe has exposed what he called “powerful banned pesticide cartels” sabotaging Kenya’s push toward food safety and sustainable farming. Speaking at the opening of the 2025 CABI Africa Regional Consultation in Nairobi, Kagwe warned that these cartels are using bribery, media influence, and institutional infiltration to block reforms.

“We are aware that banned pesticide cartels are fighting back… This is not just a policy issue—it is a fight for the health of our people,” said Kagwe to a hall of delegates from across Africa.

Kagwe’s remarks come as Kenya intensifies efforts to phase out hazardous agrochemicals under its Agricultural Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS). He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to climate-smart, inclusive farming, better market access through food safety compliance, and strict pesticide regulation.

The CABI Africa meeting, which runs until 13 June, brings together policymakers, scientists, and development partners to align on pest control, sustainable agriculture, and harmonised pesticide governance across the continent.

Kagwe praised CABI’s 30 years in Africa, especially its role in managing invasive pests and promoting science-led farming. He urged African nations to act boldly against corrupt agrochemical interests.

“Let this be a turning point—a moment where political courage meets scientific truth,” Kagwe challenged.

Stakeholders are expected to produce a regional roadmap for safer pesticide use, regulatory harmonisation, and a resilient African food future.
