From Paper to Purpose: The Remarkable Rise of Dr. A. Shem Grant

By Dennis Wanyonyi
Dr. A. Shem Grant didn’t just arrive in Kenya with ambition—he arrived with two doctorates: one in Biochemistry for solving problems, the other in Religious Studies for finding meaning. With little more than his degrees and determination, he launched Great Impress Kenya Ltd from a rented room in Nairobi’s industrial quarter. Ten years later, his branding and display materials light up bank halls and NGO events across East Africa.
But the true transformation wasn’t just in the business—it was in the man. “Science taught me how to build a balance sheet,” he says. “Faith taught me that a balance sheet isn’t the goal.”
That ethos defines his second venture, PACK & USE KENYA LIMITED, a social-impact cosmetics company that sources, processes, and packages organic products from the heart of Kenya’s informal settlements. Refusing to replicate the exploitative models of foreign firms, Dr. Grant set up a training center on the edge of Kibera and began hiring women who had never stepped into a lab.
Today, the plant converts sunflower seeds and shea kernels into premium body care items while offering its employees dignity, income, and technical skills. “We’re not just making cream,” he says. “We’re manufacturing hope.”
Still, his journey hasn’t been without loss. A financial collapse once wiped out everything he had—except a spiral notebook. From that came his book, How to Conquer Depression in a Depressed World. It became a bestseller and turned him into a sought-after speaker known as The Resilience Doctor.
What draws audiences isn’t just his success—it’s his survival. He speaks not with theory, but with the voice of someone who has lost it all and rebuilt, purposefully.
Today, Dr. Grant stands at the intersection of business, healing, and empowerment. His ventures don’t just create products—they create people. Whether mentoring youth, addressing university audiences, or launching his next startup, one thing is clear: Dr. Grant isn’t chasing success. He’s redefining it.
