PS Roseline Njogu: Protecting Kenyans Abroad Must Be Top Diplomatic Priority

Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu has called on Kenya’s foreign service officers to put the protection of Kenyans abroad at the heart of their mandate, saying it is not just a duty, but a constitutional promise.
In an opinion piece published in The East African Standard and People Daily, PS Njogu emphasized that the shield at the center of Kenya’s flag is more than symbolic—it is a national vow to safeguard all citizens, regardless of where they are.
“That shield is not ornamental, it is symbolic. It represents the State’s promise of protection to its people,” she wrote, urging diplomats and diaspora officers to act first and foremost as “Protection Officers.”
PS Njogu’s message comes amid rising concerns over the safety and welfare of Kenyans working and living abroad. Many face legal, labor, and social challenges that require urgent government support—issues that, she says, cannot be ignored.
